How to Break Vector Layers and Text Layers in After Effects

Vector assets from Illustrator import to After Effects as single Shape Layers with every path grouped together, and Text Layers hold entire sentences as one object. Animating individual elements means getting each piece onto its own layer. This article covers how After Effects handles breaking apart layers natively and how Motion Studio's Break and Text-Break tools handle both workflows faster.

How After Effects Breaks Vector Layers Natively

When you import an Illustrator file, the artwork arrives as vector footage layers. To access individual shapes, right-click the layer and choose Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer. After Effects creates a new shape layer with all paths converted from the Illustrator data, and the original layer is muted. The new shape layer contains every path grouped together under Contents.

The conversion carries over gradient fills, gradient strokes, and transparency. The converted paths are fully editable as native shape data, so Trim Paths, Repeater, Merge Paths, and individual path animation are all available. The command works on a single selected layer at a time, and if you imported the Illustrator file as a composition with multiple layers, each layer can be converted separately.

Once converted, the shape layer has all paths contained in one group. To animate each shape independently, you could use the following workflow:

  1. Duplicate the shape layer for each path you want to isolate
  2. Open each duplicate's Contents group
  3. Delete every path except the one you want to keep
  4. Rename each layer

Some Illustrator files also import as groups nested inside groups, which adds another level of expanding and separating with the above workflow.

How After Effects Handles Per-Character Text Animation

After Effects has two ways to handle character text animation: Text Animators (everything stays on one layer) and manual separation (each character gets its own layer).

Text Animators are built-in. You can select a text layer, click the Animate button next to the Text property, choose a property (Position, Scale, Opacity, Rotation), and adjust the Range Selector to control which characters animate and when. Per-character 3D is available through Animation > Animate Text > Enable Per-character 3D, which gives each character its own 3D position, rotation, and anchor point.

Text Animators work well for sequential reveals, cascading effects, and uniform animations where every character follows the same pattern with offset timing.

It may not be the best approach when each character needs a unique animation path, unique effects, or when characters need to interact with other layers independently through parenting, expressions, or track mattes. In those cases, each character needs its own layer.

You can use a similar workflow to give each character its own layer:

  1. Select the text layer
  2. Choose Layer > Create > Create Shapes from Text
  3. Duplicate the resulting shape layer for each character
  4. Open each duplicate and delete all paths except one character
  5. Rename each layer

This converts the text to vector outlines permanently, and the text is no longer editable. If you wanted to change the copy, you'd need to go back to the original text layer and repeat the conversion.

One additional alternative we've seen is duplicating the text layer for each character and using opacity Text Animators with index-based expressions to reveal only one character per layer.

What's the Fastest Way to Break Vector Layers in After Effects?

Motion Studio's Break tool automates the manual process. Select any vector shape layers, run Break, and each content group separates into its own layer.

Each content group lands on its own layer, named after the original group. The original layer stays in the comp but is hidden. Break has an Anchor Point option with two modes: Group keeps the anchor point of the original layer in the same position on each new layer, and Individual centers the anchor point on each new layer's own content.

Break accepts multiple selected layers in one pass. Select all the vector layers you want to break apart, run Break once, and all of them separate into individual shape layers.

After running Break, Motion Studio's Rename tool can batch rename the resulting layers with sequential indices or a consistent naming convention. If the resulting layers need anchor point repositioning, the Anchor tool handles batch adjustments across all the new layers at once.

What's the Fastest Way to Break Text into Individual Characters in After Effects?

Motion Studio's Text-Break breaks text layers into separate layers by character, word, or line.

  1. Select one or more text layers
  2. Choose a mode: Letters, Words, or Line
  3. Choose the output type: Shapes or Text
  4. Click Text-Break

Letters breaks each character into its own layer. Words breaks each word, and Line breaks each line of text. The output type determines what kind of layer you get: Shapes converts to vector outlines (useful when you need shape effects like Trim Paths), and Text keeps each piece as an editable text layer with font and styling preserved.

The Text output is the key difference from the native method: This mode breaks text while keeping each piece as a live text layer.

After breaking text apart, Motion Studio's Stagger tool can offset the resulting layers in time for cascading reveal animations.

Common Questions About Breaking Layers in After Effects

How Do I Break an Illustrator File into Individual Layers in After Effects?

Right-click the Illustrator layer and choose Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer. This puts all paths into one shape layer under Contents. To get individual layers, duplicate the shape layer for each path and delete the unwanted paths from each copy.

With Motion Studio, convert to shapes the same way, then select the shape layer and run Break. Every content group breaks into its own layer.

Can I Break Text into Characters Without Converting to Outlines?

Not natively. Create Shapes from Text converts text to vector outlines permanently.

Text-Break can break text into individual character layers while keeping them as editable text layers. Choose Text as the output type instead of Shapes, and each character stays as a live text layer with font and styling intact.

What's the Difference Between Text Animators and Breaking Text into Layers?

Text Animators keep everything on one layer and animate characters using Range Selectors. This works for sequential animations like cascading reveals and tracking effects. Breaking into layers gives each character its own independent layer with full access to expressions, effects, parenting, and track mattes. Use Text Animators when the animation is consistent across characters. Break into layers when each character needs more unique behavior.

How Do I Break a Shape Layer with Nested Groups?

A converted Illustrator file often contains groups nested inside groups. The manual approach requires expanding each level and duplicating per sub-group.

Break separates content groups into individual layers. The Anchor Point option controls whether the new layers inherit the original layer's anchor point position (Group) or center their anchor points on their own content (Individual).

Can I Break Multiple Vector Layers at Once?

Create Shapes from Vector Layer works on one selected layer at a time. Break accepts multiple selected layers and breaks all of them in one pass.
