Staggering layers natively
Select the layers in order and choose Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Sequence Layers. The dialog offers Overlap with a Duration and a Transition of Off, Dissolve Front Layer, or Cross Dissolve Front and Back Layers. After Effects places each layer's in-point at the previous layer's out-point, minus the overlap, in the order you selected them.
Sequence Layers moves whole layers, so they need to be trimmed to the length of the animation first. An untrimmed layer pushes everything after it far down the timeline. The assistant also has no idea what is inside the layers: it cannot offset keyframes while leaving the layers where they are, and it always runs in selection order.
For keyframes, the native route is manual. Select the keyframes on the second layer and drag them a few frames, select the third layer's keyframes and drag again, and so on down the stack. Holding Alt/Option while dragging the outer keyframe scales the selection instead of moving it, which is useful for retiming but not for staggering.
The expression route references the layer above with valueAtTime and an index-based delay. It works until you reorder the timeline, and it needs the expression on every property that moves.
How do I stagger layers by a set number of frames?
Select the layers, open Motion Studio's Stagger tool, set Type to Layer, set the Interval, and run it. Each layer shifts by the interval relative to the one before it, and the layers keep their trimmed length.
Stagger is a full-page tool with two pages. The Interval page covers the fixed-step cases:
- Type: Layer staggers whole layers. Keyframe staggers keyframes across or within layers
- Mode: In-point calculates the stagger from each layer's in-point. Out-point turns the interval into an overlap measured from the out-points
- Direction: Ascending or Descending
- Alignment: CTI starts the sequence at the current time. Layer starts it at the in-point of the first layer in the sequence
- Start Index: Top starts the count at the topmost layer, Bottom at the bottom layer
- Interval/Overlap: the offset in frames or seconds, or the amount of overlap in Out-point mode
- Grouping: staggers the layers in groups rather than one at a time
- Randomize: randomizes the offsets across the selection
How do I stagger keyframes across layers without moving the layers?
Set Type to Keyframe. Select the keyframes across the layers you want offset and run Stagger. The keyframes move, and the layer bars stay where they are. Within a single layer, the same setting offsets the selected keyframes on separate properties, which is the quickest way to make Position, Scale, and Opacity arrive a few frames apart.
How do I make a stagger accelerate instead of stepping evenly?
Switch to the Graph page. Instead of a fixed interval, the offsets follow a curve you shape, so the first layers can bunch up and the last ones spread out, or the reverse. Duration Type sets the span: Custom enables a Duration field for the total stagger time, and Work Area stretches the stagger across the current work area.
Stagger or Delay?
Stagger moves layers and keyframes in the timeline. Motion Studio's Delay does the same job with expressions and a universal control, so the offset stays adjustable and keyframeable after the fact.
